FINDERS KEEPER — New Release from J.J. Dibenedetto

FindersKeepers

1,400 miles

3 countries.

2 men she can’t trust.

What could go wrong?

FINDERS KEEPERS is the first book in the new Jane Barnaby Adventures series:

It should have been a simple job. All archaeology student Jane Barnaby had to do was pick up a box her professor needed and deliver it to him at his dig site, along with his new car. Yes, his office was in Oxfordshire, and his dig site was in Spain, a trip of 1,400 miles across three countries and two bodies of water. Still, it should have been simple.

And it was, until Jane discovered she picked up the wrong box by mistake. Not the one with boring pottery samples, but instead the one with priceless ancient Egyptian artifacts. The one that a team of international art thieves is after.

Now she’s chasing – and being chased by – the thieves. And she’s picked up a pair of passengers who claim they can help her outwit them, get her professor’s pottery back and return the artifacts to their rightful owner. If only she could figure out which one of them is working with the thieves and which one she can trust in this high-stakes game of finders keepers.

It’s available everywhere eBooks are sold:

Here’s an excerpt from Finders Keepers:

The thieves simply made a mistake. Whether Tom had put his box in the wrong room, or whether the thieves had gotten their wires crossed, who knew? She’d had trouble reading Professor Welldon’s writing; she hadn’t been sure if she was meant to go to Room 16 or Room 18 herself. It hadn’t mattered because the thieves had already gotten there and made the choice for her.

“When they finally got where they were going, they opened it up, and you can imagine their surprise.” Jane noted the vagueness there; she assumed Alex knew exactly where that was and, for whatever reason, didn’t want to say. She didn’t challenge him; she kept up her happy façade instead, and he went on. “They knew they couldn’t go back and steal the right box, but they had the label on your pottery, they knew where it was supposed to go.”

“They’re headed to Mallorca!” Jane couldn’t help herself; the words just poured out. “They’re going to wait there until I show up and try to trade, the pottery for the artifacts!”

She knew she’d said too much. Alex’s eyes lit up, just for an instant, when she mentioned Mallorca. That was something, obviously, he hadn’t known. But he caught himself almost immediately, and so did she. She wondered if he knew that she knew he was putting on an act. She wondered if he knew that she knew that he knew she was, too. And she wondered if she had any aspirin in her purse, because that train of thought was giving her a headache.

ONE LAST CALL–EXCERPT

“Don’t scream, sunshine. You’ll wake up the neighbors.” Josh was reclined on top of her covers, bare feet crossed one over the other and his hands tucked behind his head. His black T-shirt stood out starkly against the pastel colors of her quilt. His faded blue jeans were slung low and outlined his lower half to perfection.

Sarah didn’t know what had her heart pumping faster, getting startled by seeing a man in her bed or the actual sight of that sexy man reclining on her bed like he belonged there.

“Josh?” Sarah hissed. “What the hell are you doing in here? How did you get in? You better hope my mom didn’t hear you!”

He sat up and ran his fingers through the short layers of his tawny brown hair before rubbing the back of his neck. “Am I the only one here havin’ déjà vu?”

“How did you get in here?”

His grin was anything but innocent. “You should lock your window, darlin’. Anyone could climb on in here.”

“What if my mom heard you? You could have woken her up!”

“Doubt it.”

“Why is that?”

“She’s not here.”

“She’s not?” So Sarah had been tiptoeing for nothing? “How do you know?”

“She’s still with my dad.”

“At this time of night?” Sarah felt ridiculous as soon as she asked the question.

“Yep. Guess they’re havin’ a slumber party.” He raised his eyebrows in innuendo. She ignored the images that volley brought forth.

“Then why didn’t you knock and come through the front door like a normal person?”

“I was feelin’ nostalgic.”

“You’ve never climbed in my bedroom window before.”

“I know. But I wanted to.”

Passion and Suspense: Captivated in Cancun

Excerpt

     Josh moved into her path.

Mumbling, head down, Lilly ran straight into his chest…and froze. When she looked up, her eyes were wide, shocked to see him.

Priceless. And so beautiful with the moon splashing light her high Mayan cheeks and eyes as dark as the sky above, glinting with the reflection of stars.

“You heard me?” Her voice was quiet.

“Yes, And your conversation with your ex. Hard to miss since you were in my arms.”

Lilly dropped her forehead to his shoulder and buried her face. “I’m sorry you had to hear all that.”

“I’m not. Your ex is an emotionally abusive ass, and you should be happy to be free of him.” Josh picked up her chin and brushed his lips over hers. “But I think you and I are looking for the same thing. I don’t do long term, and you already know I’m temporary, just what you’re looking for.”

Josh leaned in, his lips right next to her ear, his hands in constant but slow motion. “Tell me what you want, Lilly. I’m very good at taking orders.”

Gradually she turned her head so her warm moist lips were right next to his ear. “I want…” There was a long pause before she sighed. “I’m just not sure.” The insecurity in her voice snapped his resolve. He had to respect her wishes and would never force any woman to do anything she didn’t want to do. She wasn’t ready. At least not tonight.

Josh brushed his thumbs over her freckled cheeks. “A few nights of pleasure…any way you want it…are yours.”

Alice Orr: Strawberries are Red — Tractors are Pink

Several years ago I bought my husband Jonathan a 1947 tractor to drive in the annual town parade. Back then I had no idea how much that tractor would come to mean to our family. Because back then I had no idea I’d be diagnosed with breast cancer.

We lived on Vashon Island then in Puget Sound twenty minutes by ferry from Seattle. We followed our grandchildren there from New York City – and their parents too. We were all at our first Strawberry Festival Parade when my tractor quest began.

The village main street was packed with people. Children cross-legged on the curb waited to scurry after candy tossed by the marchers. The smell of burgers and sausages drifted from a nearby food booth next to the biggest strawberry shortcakes I’d ever seen.

This was the island’s blowout event of the year but for me it was much more. I grew up in a town where they had summer parades. I’d scramble for a seat on the curbstone just like these kids now. I never expected to be part of anything like it again. Yet here I was – swallowing a sudden lump in my throat.

JJonathan on the Pink Tractoronathan didn’t share my nostalgia. It was a hot day and his interest had already flagged. Then he saw the antique tractors. The crowd roared but Jonathan wasn’t applauding. He was absolutely still. The closer they rolled. The brighter his eyes shone. I vowed right then and there that someday Jonathan would drive his own tractor in this parade.

Pink turned up three years later in Eastern Washington – a hot prairie contrast to the notoriously wet weather where we lived in Western Washington. The sun is so intense over there that our new old tractor had bleached from orange to a lovely shade of pink. We decided to leave her that way and our five acres became known as Pink Tractor Farm.

The first year Jonathan tried his best to get Pink running for the parade but despite his efforts she didn’t make it. The next year we’d moved from the island to the mainland. Before long we were yearning for the small community life we’d grown to love without realizing it. Then Pink Tractor Farm was on the market again and we bought it back.

Two months later we were back on Vashon. Same house and five acres. Same pink tractor. The difference was I had cancer. The last thing we needed was another project. But Jonathan understood what a boost it would be for me to see Pink in the Strawberry Festival Parade.

With the help of an old tractor hand named Milt – Jonathan worked many frustrating hours to get Pink running strong enough to drive the two miles to town then another mile along the parade route plus back home again.

Midnight before parade day he was tinkering by lamplight. He tinkered the next morning too until there was no tinker time left. He and Pink had to get to the parade lineup or it would be no-go again this year. They chugged down our driveway to the road. Ahead lay the long hill from our place to the lineup point.

Our two grandchildren were with me in my red jeep to spot Jonathan as he attempted the climb. Several times Pink’s engine turned over then ran a few minutes and stalled. Jonathan pronounced the inevitable by cell phone. “She’s not going to make it.”

But the children weren’t ready to give up. “Grandpa can do it!” five-year-old Julian said over and over as his ten-year-old sister Maya crossed all of her fingers. That hope and belief radiating out the jeep window to Jonathan and his pink charger may explain why he gave her one more try and she rumbled to life at last then began to climb the hill.

“Come on, Honey. You can do it,” I whispered as the kids and I drove ahead to find a parade-watching spot. “Grandpa will make it,” Maya assured me and I prayed she’d be right. It was nothing less than a family victory when Pink bumped past us at about three miles an hour smack dab in the middle of the Procession of the Antique Tractors.

“Yay Grandpa. Yay Pink Tractor Farm,” the children cheered as they jumped up and down waving the bright pink poster-board signs I’d made three years before and somehow preserved.

I’d been through six surgical procedures since spring and faced a seventh the following week. We didn’t yet know that by summer’s end I’d be blessed with a miraculous prognosis. Ninety-five or more percent chance of no recurrence of the cancer.

That Saturday parade morning I was simply tired. I planned to stay in my camp chair and wave. But as Jonathan drove by I got out of the chair and walked into the road. I reached up and grasped my husband’s hand.

We stared into each other’s eyes for a moment that contained all of the challenges between our first Strawberry Festival and this moment which was about a lot more than a pink tractor. Later on I would sum it up in this bumpy three-mile-an-hour rhyme.

Strawberries are red.
Tractors are pink.
There’s more triumph inside us than we may think.

About the Author:

Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra is a romantic suspense author with a unique point of view. Her adventure novels take place in locales across Europe and the United States, reflecting her international upbringing and extensive time as a global traveler. In her duology, The Coin and The Book of Hours, her characters, Gabriela and Richard, walk the same paths as their creator, though her life was never in so much danger.

Ms. Alonso-Sierra’s writing career began circa age thirteen with a very juvenile science fiction short story, but the writing bug hit, and she has been writing, in one capacity or another, ever since. She has worked as a professional dancer, singer, journalist, and literature teacher (and not necessarily in that order—she likes variety) and holds a Masters in English literature. She loves to hear from readers and, when not writing, roams around to discover new places to set her novels.

Ms. Alonso-Sierra is currently working on her third novel, and lives in North Carolina with her husband and her dog, Amber.
